Work Permit Options

Canada offers various work permit categories depending on your situation and goals.

LMIA-Based Work Permit

Employer-specific work permit where the Canadian employer obtains a Labour Market Impact Assessment.

  • Tied to specific employer
  • Requires positive LMIA
  • Can lead to PR through Express Entry

Open Work Permit

Allows you to work for any employer in Canada without needing an LMIA.

  • Work for any employer
  • No LMIA required
  • Available to spouses, PGWP holders, bridging permits

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

Open work permit for international students who completed a program at a Canadian DLI.

  • Valid for up to 3 years
  • Work in any occupation
  • Gain Canadian experience for PR

Intra-Company Transfer

For employees being transferred to a Canadian branch of their multinational company.

  • No LMIA required
  • For executives, managers, specialized knowledge workers
  • Must have worked for company 1+ year

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

The PGWP is one of the most valuable pathways for international students to gain Canadian work experience and transition to permanent residency.

PGWP Eligibility Requirements

  • Graduated from a public post-secondary institution (or eligible private institution in Quebec)
  • Completed a program of at least 8 months
  • Had a valid study permit when you applied
  • Applied within 180 days of receiving written confirmation of program completion
