Family Sponsorship Categories

Canada's family sponsorship program allows citizens and permanent residents to sponsor eligible family members for permanent residence.

Spousal & Partner Sponsorship

Processing: 12-15 months

Sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner to become a permanent resident of Canada.

  • Spouse or common-law partner (in or outside Canada)
  • Conjugal partner (outside Canada only)
  • Dependent children included in application
  • Inland applications include open work permit

Parents & Grandparents

Processing: 20-24 months

Bring your parents and grandparents to Canada permanently through the PGP program or Super Visa.

Dependent Children

Other Relatives

In specific circumstances, you may sponsor other relatives including orphaned relatives.

  • Orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchild
  • Any relative if you have no sponsorable relatives
  • Relative who is under 18 years of age
  • Specific conditions must be met

Sponsor Eligibility

To sponsor a family member, you must meet specific requirements set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Sponsor Requirements

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Live in Canada (citizens living abroad must show intent to return)
  • Meet minimum income requirements (for parents/grandparents)
  • Sign an undertaking to financially support sponsored family members
  • Not be in prison, bankrupt, or under a removal order
