How to read these numbers

Express Entry is a pool, not a queue. Candidates who meet the criteria for one of the federal economic programmes create a profile, receive a Comprehensive Ranking System score, and wait. Periodically IRCC runs a round of invitations, sets a number of invitations to issue, and works down the pool from the highest score. The lowest score that still received an invitation becomes that round's cut-off.

This is why the cut-off is a result rather than a requirement. There is no score IRCC has promised to invite; the number in the table is simply where the invitations ran out that day. A round issuing more invitations tends to reach further down the pool, and a round restricted to a narrow category can settle far lower than a general round held the same week.

Three kinds of round appear in the table, and comparing across them is misleading. General and programme-specific rounds are the broadest. Category-based rounds target a stated priority such as French-language proficiency or a group of occupations, and often clear at a lower score. Provincial Nominee Program rounds look dramatically higher only because a nomination itself carries 600 points — they are open exclusively to candidates who already hold one.

If your score sits below the recent cut-offs, the useful question is not whether you qualify today but which levers move your number: a stronger language result, another year of skilled experience, a completed credential, or a provincial nomination. Some candidates are closer than they assume, particularly where a category-based round applies to their occupation or language ability.

Express Entry draw questions

IRCC generally runs rounds of invitations every two weeks, though the pace and the mix of categories change through the year. Some weeks carry several rounds in a row targeting different programmes, and there are occasional longer gaps. The table above is drawn live from IRCC's own published data, so it reflects whatever schedule they are actually running.

The cut-off is the lowest Comprehensive Ranking System score that received an invitation in that round. If your score is at or above the cut-off for a round you were eligible for, you would have been invited. It is not a fixed target: it moves every round based on how many invitations IRCC issues and how strong the pool is that day.

Provincial Nominee Program rounds show very high cut-offs because a provincial nomination adds 600 points to your score. Those rounds are only open to candidates who already hold a nomination, so the scores are not comparable to a general or category-based round.

Alongside general and programme-specific rounds, IRCC runs rounds targeting particular categories — for example French-language proficiency, healthcare, trades or transport occupations. Category rounds often have noticeably lower cut-offs than general rounds, so a candidate who is not competitive overall can still be invited if they fit a targeted category.

Scores are rarely fixed. Improving a language test result, adding Canadian work experience, completing a credential, or pursuing a provincial nomination all move the number, and category-based rounds may put you in reach without any change at all. A licensed consultant can tell you which levers are realistic in your specific case.
